Carriage Driving

Cirencester activity carriage driving
  • Available all year round
  • Taking place across the UK, carriage driving is predominantly an amateur sport. As a competitive discipline, it maintains a wilfully low profile even though it can be really exciting to watch.
  • Cotswold Horse Tours can arrange a leisurely carriage or wagon drive, rolling along country lanes, through quiet countryside and past pretty houses, perhaps going to a village pub for lunch or dinner. It is a pleasantly relaxing activity, with the clip-clop of hooves setting the rhythm of the journey. Duration may be from 45 minutes up to two hours, though longer drives may be arranged. Group size is strictly limited by the vehicles available and the load the horses can pull.
  • We can organise tuition in carriage driving, from short tasters, up to full days or even courses over several days. These are run by professionals with specialist qualifications and appropriate horses because *NB* This is Formula 1 sport not a vintage car rally. We can offer a full package with lessons and accommodation.
  • The other way to see horse drawn vehicles is at the Shows. Scurry Racing is a popular competition, a fast and furious race against the clock as galloping pairs of pones are driven around a course. Trade Turnout classes, by contrast, are fascinating living history, where impeccably restored trade vehicles are driven to appropriate ponies by people in vintage dress. An almost unique sight as few other nations run such classes. Cotswold Horse Tours can arrange a visit to a Show to see these activities, together with lots of fascinating other things. It is an excellent day out for all the family.
