The cheerful little horse used on the company logo is based on the silver and gold coins struck by the Dobunni, the British tribe living in the area of Cirencester prior to the Roman invasion. The horse was obviously a potent symbol for the tribe and it also had religious and ritual significance. Horse skulls, other bones and teeth are found at iron age sites across the region, frequently in close association with human bones. When working to create the logo, it became apparent that the abstract form of the horse on the coin was based on familiarity with the animal and precise observation, notably in the shape of the hooves and angles of the fetlocks. There is a suggestion that the famous chalk hill-figure of the White Horse at Uffington was another powerful tribal symbol, cut into the hillside before the Romans even ventured into Britain, to mark a boundary of the Dobunni territory.
